Work-Integrated Education
To qualify for the degree award, you are required to undertake a Work-Integrated Education (WIE) placement in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland, or overseas. WIE is work-based learning experiences which take place in an organizational context relevant to a student’s future profession, or the development of generic skills that will be valuable in that profession. It can take different forms, such as a summer internship, where you can apply your knowledge and skills acquired from the classroom to the real working world.
Periods Abroad
1. Non-local WIE Placements
You can participate in a non-local WIE placement in an English-speaking country or in the Chinese mainland. We currently offers three non-local Summer Placement Programmes: a four-week placement programme hosted by the School of Education, Southern Cross University, in Australia; a three-week placement programme hosted by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Tsinghua University, in Beijing; and a four-week internship programme hosted by the College of Foreign Languages, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, in Shanghai.
2. Student Exchange Programmes
Students can apply for participation in credit-earning Student Exchange Programmes, which will enable them to spend a semester overseas at of one our partner universities in China, Japan or an English-speaking country.
Senior Year/Advanced Standing Students
Study Pattern:
Students who directly enter Year 3 based on their previous academic results in an Associate Degree/Higher Diploma programme will in principle follow the BAESP Year-3 study pattern. However, due to their special status, they may be required to follow a tailor-made progression pattern specially designed for them so that they will be able to graduate within the normal time frame. Students will be provided with the progress pattern upon their registration. As such, students are normally given a block credit-transfer upon their entry into the programme, this block credit transfer will be given and recorded in the form of "recognized credits" in their academic transcripts with no specification of subjects and grades. Credits earned from previous study should remain valid at the time when the student is considered for admission and for block credit transfer. Furthermore, no further credit transfer application will be entertained within the BAESP curriculum.
Academic Pathway:
All BAESP Senior Year Entry students are required to follow the Single Discipline Major Pathway. The student needs to satisfy the degree requirement of the BA (Honours) in English Studies for the Professions by completing 60 academic credits and 3 training credits. Therefore, in addition to the 9 GUR Credits, the student should (1) complete 9 GUR credits, and (2) complete 51 Major DSR Credits by taking subjects offered by BAESP with at least 21 credits from level-4 subjects. However, students have the freedom to complete up to 75 credits without incurring a higher tuition fee, by taking additional courses offered within the BAESP programme, including subjects listed in the Global Languages section, or by other PolyU academic departments if they prefer.
